Just when you think Albany can’t get any lower they’ve gotten lower. Introduced into the budget this week is a New York State Baby Tax which will increase the cost of giving birth to a child by 4%. Of course, this new tax would do nothing to cut into the deficit but would instead be used to offset the cost of malpractice insurance.
Of course, Gov. Cuomo would like to cap medical malpractice jury awards to $250,000 so why in the hell do we need a baby tax? Doesn’t common sense dictate that if jury awards are limited to $250,000 the cost of malpractice insurance would decrease? Of course but we are not dealing with common sense.
First off, there is no way that something that makes 100% total sense as in limiting malpractice awards will ever pass. Second, since the cost of malpractice insurance is so high they cost of insurance needs to be passed on to the consumer. Unfortunately, smart people aren’t the primary baby makers. Who does that award go to? This Baby Making Award goes to the people who live in homeless shelters with their 4 kids who complain about having nothing but is knocked up with a 5th child.
What in the hell is the world coming to?
